Finding a swarm of winged insects inside or around your home can send stress levels through the roof quickly. Your first thought is usually: Are these termites eating my house, or are they just flying ants?
At a glance, they can look surprisingly similar. But getting it wrong can go two ways. You might brush off termites and give them more time to damage your property, or you might panic over ants that are more nuisance than disaster.
To help you work out what’s going on, here’s a quick guide from the team at Jacka Bros Pest Control.
If you want to tell them apart, there are three things worth checking closely: the waist, the antennae, and the wings.
1. The Waist
2. The Antennae
3. The Wings

This is where the difference really matters.
Flying ants are usually on the move to mate or looking for access to food. They’re often drawn to crumbs, sugary spills, and other food sources around the home. While they can be frustrating, they don’t eat timber or quietly hollow out the structure of your house. If ants are becoming a recurring problem, professional flying ants control can help you get on top of the source instead of just chasing the trail.
Termites are a very different story. They feed on cellulose found in timber, cardboard, and other plant-based materials, which is why they can cause major structural damage if left unchecked. Because much of that activity happens out of sight, a termite issue can build up before there are any obvious warning signs. That’s why proper termite pest control matters.
One of the biggest giveaway signs of termites is what they leave behind. After swarming, termites shed their wings very quickly. If you notice small piles of wings on windowsills, near doorways, or along the floor, it’s worth taking seriously. It can be an early sign that a termite colony is active nearby and that a professional inspection or termite control treatment may be needed.
If you notice winged insects outside in the garden, it may simply be part of the natural cycle. But if you’re seeing them swarm inside your home, it’s a good idea to act sooner rather than later.
DIY sprays might knock down the insects you can see, but they won’t tell you what you’re dealing with or solve the bigger issue behind it. If it’s ants, the nest may still be active. If it’s termites, the main colony could still be hidden underground or inside the structure of the home.
If you’re unsure whether you’re looking at flying ants or termites, Jacka Bros Pest Control can help. We can inspect the area properly, identify the pest, and talk you through the most practical next steps for your home.
Getting a clear answer early can save a lot of stress, and in the case of termites, it can help you avoid much bigger repair bills down the track.
